Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee


Investigators must obtain Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval prior to using vertebrate animals in research or teaching and must adhere to the approved protocol in carrying out their activities. Investigators must comply with all other applicable IACUC, Office of Animal Research (OAR), and university requirements, including, for example, requirements regarding protocol changes, continuing review, training, access, purchasing, and occupational health and safety.

Timeline

All protocol submissions must be received at least fifteen business days prior to the scheduled IACUC meeting to be included on that meeting’s agenda. IACUC meetings typically occur on the first Friday of every month.

  • Protocols that receive Full Committee Review (FCR) generally require 6-8 weeks for review and approval.
  • Protocols that receive Designated Member Review (DMR) generally require 4-6 weeks for review and approval.
  • Protocols that receive Administrative Review (AR) generally require 1-2 weeks for review and approval.

The principal investigator (PI) will receive the results of the IACUC’s review via e-mail within five business days of the IACUC meeting at which the protocol was reviewed.
